Green fingers

Its the wrong time of year (probably) and its the wrong type of weather (I imagine) but today we suddenly decided to do some gardening.  We have had gift vouchers knocking around for nearly two years and finally got around to using them today, buying 7 plants and some compost.

At least we were sensible enough to wait until the garden was mostly in shade before doing any digging or weeding, but it was still pretty bloody hot.

I think the impetus for all this was a combination of being fed up with how the grass and weeks keep taking over the borders of the garden and realising that the only parts of the borders with no problem were those bits with bushes in them – so we got a load more shrubby, bushy sort of things to fill up more of the border.  They probably have more specific names than that, but bushy shrubby things is good enough for me.

Now we just have to patiently wait a year or two, or three, for them to get established and fill out a bit.  I'm sure that summer is not the best time to go planting stuff, but if only half the new plants 'take' it will be a real improvement.

One problem is that neither of us really enjoy gardening or know anything about it.  We don't go around cutting things back or adding chemicals or other substances to the soil at certain times of the year or anything like that: I figure that plants know how to grow without my intervention.

I read gardening books and magazines and watch Gardeners World. We go to the Harrogate Flower Show every year and my general guidelines are: if it doesn’t thrive without being watered after the first week or so, needs anything more than a hack back every year or so or doesn’t grow to fill whatever space we’ve got for it then I don’t bother with it. Still can’t beat your cat crop though…

I can’t help thinking what a good thing it is that neither of us ever had children.
