I live in a representative democracy, where I vote for someone to go away and represent me and make all these decisions. If they were to start referring everything back to me I think I would want a rebate.

If you were writing some sort of political satire, and invented an unlikely and blatant abuse of parliamentary expenses you would give up in despair. Whatever outrageous scheme you came up with would be trumped by a real MP before the ink was dry.

With all the shenanigans about dodgy donations, backhanders to invisible relatives and other ‘administrative errors’ I expected a steady stream of similar examples to be uncovered. I didn’t expect to see the whole expenses thing taken to a whole new level of piss-taking.

There are a few notable anniversaries this week: at Old Trafford Christiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez both celebrate their birthdays on Tuesday while over the other side of Manchester Sven does the same. It is also the 20th anniversary of the first Red Nose Day – so Alex Ferguson gets a look-in too.

The other day I saw the new Seat advert, which is an early candidate for most annoying advert of the year. I can’t remember all the details, but it made the M&S food adverts seem down-to-earth and unpretentious.
