Broom, broom

There is a bit of speculation about what we are going to be up to next week. The IT department is having its regular team meeting, followed by some sort of non-work team-building activity, but the boss is being a bit coy about the details. He has been threatening us with a team event for a while now, suggesting we might be doing one of those things that involves ropes and getting wet, but now he has told us that we will be go-karting “with a difference”. The trouble is we don’t entirely believe him.

There are reasons for the scepticism. For a start the boss likes to think he has a mischievous side so we tend to expect a bit of mis-direction. We have also been told in no uncertain terms that we have to take our driving licences with us: both parts. Now I have never been go-karting, but I’m pretty sure you do not need a driving licence because they are not cars and they are not on the public highway.

In a way I am as guilty as the boss of winding people up. Because we are going to head office for the meeting and that is close to where Top Gear do all their filming, I persuaded our secretary that we were going to be driving Ferraris around their test track. The thing is I am not sure you would even need a licence for that, what with it being on a private track, not to mention that it would cost money that we would all rather see spent on computers.

The boss is trying building it all up and trying to drop hints to make us apprehensive, but I am immune to that because I keep reminding myself of one important thing: he is a member of the team too, and very conscientious about it so whatever it is he will have to join in. Ergo, it can’t be too bad.

Even if it turns out to be a double-bluff and it really is just go-karting, that would be fun.  I am used to driving a tiny vehicle with a tiny engine so I should have an advantage.  The Mrs. is taking the mickey though because of my habit of sticking to speed limits – not that I have much choice with my car.

You don’t need a driving license to drive a go-kart (or a quad bike) since they let me do it. I didn’t take to go-karting since, as a non-driver, I couldn’t remember which was the accelerator and which the brake. Quad bikes rock though. I’d hope it was quad bikes (unless it had been raining a lot beforehand as, how shall we say, heavier drivers seem to get muddier….)
