Country Life

We had some good news today up here in the grim North.  The planning application for a fairly large Tesco store in our village, on very busy crossroads that snarl up as soon as a bus has to pick up more than a few passengers at a time, has been rejected by 6 votes to 1. And this is despite the planning department recommending that the application be passed!

We have played a fairly small part in the objections, attending some meetings of a coalition of local businesses, sending letters of objection (thanks to some good advice from Skuds on how to approach this) and, of course, keeping our fingers crossed.  We couldn’t get to the planning meeting, not without leaving our workplaces in the lurch, so it has been a little tense waiting for news.  We have, unfortunately, two local BNP councillors in Queensbury so we are very grateful for the support which our third councillor, Michael Walls, gave the campaign.  A Tory, but a good one!  In fact the song title I have used is for Councillor Walls – a fellow folkie – and does not refer to the works of Roxy Music but to Show of Hands, a folk duo from Devon who have filled the Albert Hall on three occasions! The lyric ‘Out to graze, they look so sweet/ We hate the blood, we want the meat/ Buy me a beer, I’ll take my knife/ Cut you a slice of country life’ seems appropriate in support of our local farm shop (and its pet turkeys) over Tesco.
