Scrobbling

March 15th, 2009 · Posted by Skuds in Music/Technology · 2 Comments · Music, Technology

Apparently I have been scrobbling, and it is not as painful as it sounds.  It just means that I connected my Spotify up to Last.fm so that it feeds information on what I have been listening to.  I have made a conscious and arbitrary decision to not scrobble from Windows Media Player, but since getting into Spotify I hardly use that now anyway. The reason for this was to try and get the best of both worlds.  Last.fm is supposed to be good at recommending stuff to listen to based on what you have already listened to, but I don’t find it very good for using to listen to music.  Spotify is better for listening because of the instantaneous start, sound quality and lack of any sort of lagging – plus the extensive range in its catalogue.  This way I can carry on streaming music from Spotify and then when Last.fm has got a big enough sample it might throw up some interesting suggestions for me.

Well, that was the theory…  the only suggestions so far have been so obvious as to be not worth making.

One side effect is that I can put that widget in the sidebar that shows what I am currently listening to. Very scary.    That could be a temptation to only listen to painfully ‘credible’ music, but I have passed the point of caring what anybody thinks about my tastes in music so if I feel the urge to listen to Right Said Fred, Mel & Kim, or even James Blunt it will show up there – and not in the spirit of so-called guilty pleasures.

Underneath all this is a sort of fascination with how it all works, but it brings me no nearer to tweeting.  When it comes to Twitter that is when I start to feel old and out of touch…   just when I think I have embraced web 2.0 by engaging in blogs, Flickr, Facebook, Amazon recommendations, wikis and Last.fm I find something I just can’t see the point of – quite possibly because I have never felt the urge to use a mobile phone to connect to the internet.
