Friday 13th – lucky for some

I’m very chuffed to see that Lindsay Hoyle’s private members bill got through yesterday, but more than a little disappointed by the suggestions that the government whips tried to block it.

The nearest we get to a government position on this is:

Minister Pat McFadden said he had sympathy with the bill’s aims but said it would be too costly on firms already facing pressures during the recession.

I can’t disagree with that, but surely that is the whole point!   At the moment laying off staff is the cheap option and therefore one of the first things companies will do when there are problems.  Bringing statutory redundancy payment levels back up to their historic levels will make laying off staff a last resort because of its cost, and redundancy should be a last resort.
