One thing that has torpedoed my intentions to catch up on music I avoided the first time round is the sudden flurry of good new music on Spotify.
This week I have listened to the new albums by Amadou & Mariam and the Dead Weather, plus a new single from Arctic Monkeys. All very good, but I was most taken with the Dead Weather album, probably because I didn’t know what to expect from them. The Dead Weather is yet another Jack White band so I knew it would be lo-fi and probably a bit raucous but beyond that I wasn’t sure, because this time he is not the singer/guitarist but the drummer. Sorry to re-cycle the old Ringo Starr joke, but it turns out that Meg White was not even the best drummer in the White Stripes!  I do actually like her as a drummer – but Jack shows a lot more variety.
After all that I have started listening to Boston’s second album from 1978 and so far its nothing special. Not that it is bad, just that it is a bit generic for me. Nothing to make me want to sing along like More Than A Feeling. I had a little dip into their 4th album (Walk On) and it sounds a bit better.
Maybe I’ll try Blue Oyster Cult tomorrow.
