Two of my favourites together on stage: Carlos Santana and Angelique Kidjo  When Jayne treated me to Santana tickets for my birthday (quite a long time ago) Angelique Kidjo joined him for this song – which she wrote and he covered on his Shamen album.  It made my day then, and finding this clip […]

Did somebody say recession?

Apperently times are harder for some than for others if Selfridges reckon they will sell a leg of ham at a price of more than £250 a kilo (and than includes the bone!) according to the BBC. You would want to be sparing with the Branston on that wouldn’t you?
BNP Algebra

Either Nick Griffin is barking mad or he thinks that one white person is worth about 2272 non-white people. The two are not mutually exclusive though.
Rise in hate crime follows BNP council election victories

Well that is the headline in this Guardian story, which doesn’t come as any surprise at all – it is inevitable really. Even the BNP don’t deny that the numbers of racially-motivated crimes has risen where they have won seats – they just have a different explanation for it. According to them it is not […]
Vive la difference

Another dull, weather-related post, but I thought it might be fun to compare the response to snow(balls) in two different places. In Crawley: You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video And in Washington: You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video I’m so glad we have […]
Wrong kind of snow?
January 13th, 2010 · Comments Off on Wrong kind of snow? · Life
Maybe the railways had a point with their now-notorious complaints about ‘the wrong kind of snow’ after all. We had a little bit of the white stuff here overnight and although there was nowhere near as much as last week it seems to have had more of an impact.

Baionarena

After Christmas I treated myself to a couple of things on Amazon, notionally using some xmas money from Mum (happy birthday today BTW – 70 candles!). Unfortunately they had not quite arrived when the snow fell and so they didn’t get delivered here until today, when the postman brought a huge backlog of mail – […]
From each according to their ability…
January 12th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Life
I did like what I read in this story from Switzerland. Basically, a bloke got a speeding ticket and was fined £182,000 for doing 55mph in a 55mph zone. It might seem a bit harsh, but the amount was decided based on the man’s ability to pay and not the scale of the offence. Some […]
I’m black and I’m proud

I am trying to resist the temptation to write about the weather, but really nothing much else is happening here. Today I decided to spend the day at home reviewing a huge pile of HR policies instead of walking either one mile or five miles to work (depending on whether the buses are running). I […]

A bit of a trek
January 7th, 2010 · Comments Off on A bit of a trek · Life
Sometimes even I am astonished by my naivety. Perhaps misplaced optimism is a better alternative. After last night’s walk I knew there would be no buses up Tollgate Hill (no problem as I don’t want them anyway) but I just sort of presumed the more level roads would be better anyway and that the main […]
