Bad day for trainspotters…

December 18th, 2010 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

…and for bus-spotters, and plane spotters here in West Sussex anyway.

According to the BBC:

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said major roads were prepared for the “extreme cold weather”, which had been predicted, and public transport services were “by and large still working”.

Meanwhile in the real world Metrobus who run all the bus services here say on their website: (1830 update)

SERVICES IN SUSSEX, SURREY & KENT:     The following routes are suspended and unable to operate; 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 20, 23, 24, 51, 61, 65, 82, 84, 89, 93, 98, 100, 200, 270, 271, 272, 273, 280, 281, 291, 409, 411, 420, 430, 435 460, 465, 480, 541.

Wouldn’t it be easier and less confusing to just list the services that are running?  Gatwick airport was closed for much of the day, and Southern Railways say:

Under these circumstances, following discussions with infrastructure provider Network Rail, it has been decided that we will run a revised service today with fewer services, but with additional carriages on many trains. This timetable will finish at 22:00

Which is nice – but hardly worth going anywhere if there is no guaranhtee of getting back.

Hardly surprising the buses are not running because most of the roads look quite unsuitable.  I walked down to Langley Green shops along the bus route and the road was compacted snow with the few cars out there suffering a lot of wheelspin and slipping.

Looking forward to next week’s local papers where the council again pat themselves on the back and tell us how well they have managed.

I’m not complaining about the snow, or half the roads being dangerous.  No really, but I am moaning a bit about trying to pretend everything is normal.
