May 2026

May was a mixture of being busy and of spending a lot of time doing not much at all.

A lot of the busyness was to do with driving. After going up to Scotland to pick up the keys to our new place at the end of April I drove back down and immediately we had to go up to Norwich for a grandson’s birthday celebration. During the month I drove back up to Scotland to take a few belongings up – a few basics for the kitchen, my computer gear and a comfy chair to sit in. I had to go up ahead of Jayne because I was having a bed delivered, the assembling of which kept me occupied.

Jayne came up on her rest days so she could meet with the people doing our kitchen. After that we had a visit from Virgin to install the broadband, and then we went into Kilmarnock to order a new sofa. Jayne had to go back to work but I followed a couple of days later for a flying visit where I did a tip run, packed up more stuff, and then filled the car to the brim and drove back to Scotland.

All together I made the 400+ mile journey between Ayrshire and Crawley three times in the month.

For a lot of the month I have been sitting in an almost empty house all on my own. The living room has a TV sat on a carboard box, a single armchair, a fold-out dining table and that is about it. The kitchen has a few staples in it, and my office has a new desk set up with my work and personal computers. I do at least have my turntable, but only a handful of LPs.

I have been doing some exploring of the local area, and discovered a couple of nice places to walk to. I have been having trouble adjusting to how late it stays light, and have been waking up at stupidly early times, but the new adjustable bed seems to be doing its job in preventing my reflux attacks

Considering how much time I have had, I really haven’t got round to consuming much media. I watched one film in the month (War Machine) and only watched a few bits and pieces on TV. Most surprising of all, I only read three books in the month, and only bought three records when I took my bike out for a spin to Dorking for (probably) my last visit to the shop there. I think I have been getting sucked into too many games of Age of Empires on the computer.

The advantage of the long days up in Scotland is that I can go out for a decent walk after work, but my longest walks were on a weekend when I ventured to the the wood to the South and to the North of the village. So far I am enjoying the change of pace, but really can’t wait until Jayne finishes her job and can join me full-time. Never mind, we still have more stuff to pack and move, and other stuff to dispose of before we can finally move out of Crawley for good.
