Over the years I must have walked past this building hundreds of times, but I only noticed it yesterday. Can it really be a house where somebody lives?
In the photo it looks quite appealing, but the picture only hints at the surroundings. The area in front of it is the new Waterloo bus depot. The railway lines from Waterloo East to Charing Cross run a few feet from its back wall and there is an air vent shaft to the tube station behind it.
The place has no direct access to a road. And yet it does not look as if it has been converted to any sort of official use. It stands alone, surrounded by public facilities. If it is in use as a house there can’t be one in the country with better access to public transport!
I can’t help wondering why it is there. Was there once a row of houses and this is the only one left? One of the things I like best about London is the way it can surprise you, even in areas which you thought you knew like the back of your hand.
On yesterday’s lunchtime walk I even found another Banksy which I hadn’t noticed before.
