Last word on the royal visit

November 8th, 2006 · 1 Comment · Life

Surprisingly, I don’t really have a problem with the Queen. If anything she deserves some sympathy for being born into an unenviable lifestyle. I don’t have any particular affection for her either. In fact I am pretty neutral on the person (lets face it, she had as much choice in the matter of her being […]

Number one

November 8th, 2006 · 6 Comments · Music

Someone sent me a link to a website which tells you what the number one single was on the day you were born – or any other date you decide to put in I suppose. Harmless fun, but I was a little disappointed by the result for me: She's Not You by Elvis Presley.  It […]

American and British politicians

November 8th, 2006 · 4 Comments · Politics

With all the focus on US elections at the moment I was having a look at the political structures of the US on Wikipedia earlier and although I don’t understand their set-up over there any more than I did I now know a lot more about it, if that makes any sense, and it made […]

What I learned today

November 6th, 2006 · Comments Off on What I learned today · Technology

I was looking up Austin 7s after watching the veteran car run today and discovered that the first BMWs were actually Austin 7s made under licence, and the first Nissan also used the Austin 7 design (although they didn’t license it). I found it interesting, but I imagine that if I lived in the Midlands […]

Blunkett beware!

October 28th, 2006 · 1 Comment · Life

While visiting the family in Essex today I learned something really cool from my sister. She has a labrador puppy, but I was not aware that it is not hers. It is intended to be a guide dog for the blind. What happens is that they are placed with families until a certain age when […]

Having discovered the other day that Lee Brilleaux, the very epitome of South Essex music, was actually born in South Africa, today I learned that Johnny Clegg, who is one of the leading lights of South African music was actually born in Rochdale. Its a funny old world.

Hush Puppies

October 25th, 2006 · Comments Off on Hush Puppies · Life

I learned something utterly trivial but brilliant today. The Hush Puppies shoes were named after a type of fried cornballs, which got their name because farmers in the Southern US used to throw them at their dogs to stop them barking. At the time ‘barking dogs’ was a term for sore feet.

Random African Trivia

October 23rd, 2006 · Comments Off on Random African Trivia · Life, Music

Today I learned that there are no railways in The Gambia or Somalia and that Lee Brilleaux was not born on Canvey Island, or even close, but was born in Durban, South Africa.

Oops…

October 23rd, 2006 · Comments Off on Oops… · Technology

I take it all back. Turns out I cocked up my own set-up while I was doing the other one yesterday. When I ran into problems I was looking at all my files to make sure I set the other site up the same way and somehow set the permissions on my .htaccess file wrongly, […]

Dymaxion

October 17th, 2006 · 1 Comment · Technology

Today I found out all about Dymaxion and Buckminster Fuller. Such an interesting character: I can't believe I had never heard of him before. Fuller was an American designer, architect and inventor – and much more.  He coined the phrase 'Spaceship Earth' and invented the geodesic dome. But he did so much more. In a […]
