At the moment a lot of bloggers are doing these lists (see Bloggers4labour, Rullesnberg Rules, The Thimble, and many others) so I thought I would have a go.
The thing is, its not as easy as it looks at first. For the list to work I believe they should be things which are so common that its almost an acheivement not to done them (like ‘Own a television’) or something which you would like to do but haven’t been able to, and preferably a mixture of these. There would be no point in just listing things like ‘walked on the moon’, ‘won a Nobel prize’, etc.
My problem is twofold. Firstly my mind has gone a bit blank, and secondly I have done quite a few things in my time, many of them the sort of thing which would sit well in such a list if only I hadn’t done them. For example, I have ridden in the drivers cab of a train, been bitten by a snake, flown a helicopter, acted at the Old Vic, stood for public office, spent an entire day speaking only in a foreign language, put a child’s pet out of its misery (on Xmas Eve!), been up the Empire State Building, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Eiffel Tower, and lets not mention any of the sex and drugs-related exploits! 😉
Up until last year I could have put ‘watched the original Star Wars films’ on the list, which would have been an achievement for someone of my age and inclinations.
Lets have a go anyway. I have never:
- Dived from a diving board
- Been to the Glastonbury festival or the opera
- Fired any gun except an air rifle
- Run a marathon
- Fathered a child
- Tried skiing, surfing or snorkeling
- Been to Scotland, Ireland or Cornwall
- Watched Raging Bull, Citizen Kane or The Godfather
- Owned anything by Bruce Springsteen or Neil Young
- Read Catcher In The Rye, or anything by Jane Austen
All I can say is, that there are a lot of things I wish I could add to that list but unfortunately can’t…
