Peace march

August 7th, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

Today there was a peace march in Crawley, organised by some of the muslim ladies of the town. The publicity was not 100% effective, and the start time and venue had to change slightly when the police warned that the BNP were going to organise their own march, but but it still managed to attract enough people to outnumber the police.

We marched from the Memorial Gardens to Southgate Playing Fields, where several speeches were made by various people, including our MP, the leader of the county council, the leader of the local Ammidiya muslims, someone from the British Muslim Council, the Anglican chaplain from Gatwick airport, a local Sikh, a director and an executive from the borough council, and representatives from the Crawley Young Persons Council.

Thats the CYPC in the photo. Our boy, Frankie, is the one on the right. He did well. I’m sure his mother would have been proud of him, but she had to leave before then to go to work. Press coverage was not too bad. Jon from the local papers was there, along with some other photographers, and a TV news crews also turned up. The local Respect people were there too. They had their leaflets and copies of Socialist Worker but did not try to take over at all, and I think there were some BNP members – at least there were 4 very ugly men surrounded by police in the car park so I am assuming they were BNP.
