The War of the Worlds

Today I caved in and bought the re-released CD of Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds. I know its really old, and was a bit naff even at the time, but I was tempted by the fact that it is a hybrid SACD with the whole thing remixed in 5.1 surround sound. There are so few albums available on SACD for me to show off (and justify having) and SACD-capable DVD player that I could not resist it, and it seemed to me that this is the sort of album which would gain something from a surround treatment.

And I was right on all counts. It is still a bit naff, but now that I have grown out of being afraid to like un-cool stuff Its quite enjoyable, especially with the volume up and sound effects all over the place.

Those first few words from Richard Burton made the years slip away and mentally I was back in 1979.

No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space.

Full marks for synchronicity though: it starts with a huge mass of luminous gas erupting from Mars at midnight on August 12th. Not only that but August 12th this year saw the peak day for activity of the perseid meteor showers. I didn’t see much at midnight, but later on there were some spectacular meteors.
