Work-life balance

I would hate to be Ruth Kelly. On the day she is announcing new policies of exactly the type which a Labour government should be announcing, the papers are more concerned with leadership personality issues. On the BBC News website you will not find this on the front page, but almost dropping off the 'top stories' in the Politics section.

No doubt this announcement will be characterised as 'political correctness gone mad' in some quarters, but it is the sort of thing a lot of us joined the party to encourage – addressing some of the inequalities in life.

I would like to know a little more about it though. Even looking at the Department for Communities and Local Government's website I could not get the background to a couple of details in the press release, namely:

Ms Kelly, who was meeting TUC leaders at the annual women's conference reception in Brighton last night, will announce that she intends to implement almost all the 40 recommendations published last year by the Women and Work Commission.

and

In her announcement today, Ms Kelly is expected to say that 80 big companies have signed up to become "exemplar employers", committing themselves to allowing women returning to work after bringing up children the chance to get good jobs as well as to sign up for part-time or flexible working.

I would be genuinely interested to know which of those 40 recommendations Ms Kelly does not intend to implement and why. No doubt there are good reasons, but I really expect a bit more from the Guardian than just re-heating a press release: I want a little more detail on the background.

I would also be interested to see a list of these 80 big companies instead of just the 2 or 3 examples given.

On the face of it this is another positive measure, aimed to help those who most need help, which examplifies the whole purpose of the Labour movement, will hopefully cause a real improvement to many lives, and yet most people will not hear about it – not even those most affected.

Yet again I am amazed that our party still has a reputation of being masters of spin when all the evidence points in the opposite direction and genuine attempts to improve lives and reduce inequalities get hidden as well as our genuine acheivements in these areas.

One of the recommendations that she won’t be implementing (despite massive calls for it at the recent Labour Women’s Forum, amongst other groups) is mandatory pay audits. Mainly because the Commission needed everybody to agree to every recommendation in the report and not everyone would agree to that one.

There are some who say that all this Labour leadership (and deputy leadership) nonsense is simply a ‘weapon of mass distraction’…and there is something else going on while the many are looking the other way…?

Thats a bit unlikely. As far as I can see there is more good stuff getting passed over than bad stuff.
