Canvassing

April 7th, 2008 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

Political campaigning is a funny old game.  Everyone has their own opinion about the best or worst times to go out, as if there is some sort of magical time when you can go down a street and find that everybody is not only at home but willing to answer the door and spend a few minutes chatting.

In reality it seems that whatever time you go out there is no real pattern to it.  There are some doors in Broadfield I have knocked at so many times I can almost see a dent in them, but I have never seen them open despite having been there on weekends, weekdays, mornings, evenings and different times of the year.

When I have been out at weekends recently it has felt like everybody is out, and I sometimes wonder how come if nobody is in all the car parking spaces are full.  Today I went out with a few colleagues after work to see if we would have more luck in the evening.

It was bizarre. In one street only one person answered their door and Monday evening was looking like a bad time to try canvassing.  In the next street it felt like nearly everybody was in and not only that but 5 out of 6 were saying they supported Labour.  There really is no pattern to it, but let’s hope those folk we talked to this evening were not the 5 out of 6 voters who stay at home on election day!
