Right tune, wrong words

June 20th, 2008 · Comments Off on Right tune, wrong words · Life

After reading this story about Swiss TV making a cock-up with the lyrics to the German national anthem there was something bugging me; something obvious but I just couldn’t work out what it was.  Today it suddenly came to me: Swiss TV displays the lyrics to national anthems at football matches as sub-titles! How strange.  […]

Glitches

June 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Technology

Something really strange happened here yesterday.  I was halfway through posting about our afternoon of throwing £72,000 cars around Surrey, and WordPress just stopped working properly.  Somehow I became logged out, and then I couldn’t log back in again.

No contest

June 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Life, Politics

Tonight at 7:30 there is the Broadfield neighbourhood forum just up the road (topic: Broadfield parks and green spaces).  On the other hand, at 7:45 Portugal and Germany kick-off in the first quarter final.  Not a difficult decision to make…

Driven round the bend

June 19th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Life, Technology, Work

We had our team meeting today, followed by the mystery activity that had been billed as ‘go-karting with a difference’.   The boss didn’t tell us what we were doing until the last minute, when he gave us a map to Mercedes Benz World at Brooklands, and told us that we were going to be shown […]

On yer bike

June 18th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Life, Work

I am very tempted by this cycle2work scheme.  One thing that has put me off the idea of cycling to work is the state of my 20-year-old bike, which was only a cheap one when I bought it, and it saw 20 miles a day of cross-London commuting for several years.  Its a bit rusty […]

Now that’s dedication. I think.

June 17th, 2008 · Comments Off on Now that’s dedication. I think. · Life, Politics

How on Earth could I have forgotten about the France/Italy game tonight when I said I was free for a Labour party meeting tonight?    I’m now in a dilemma about whether to record it for when I get home or just watch the highlights later on.   On paper it should be a really good game.  […]

A good point

June 17th, 2008 · 9 Comments · Life

I am currently reading John O’Farrell’s surprisingly thick history of Britain, and was very taken by this footnote: The Bible forbade Christians to lend money and so it became the trade of the Jewish diaspora. Modern right-wing Christians citing the Bible’s opposition to homosexuality do not seem to have the same enthusiasm for outlawing the […]

Saving Money

June 17th, 2008 · Comments Off on Saving Money · Life

I have been looking through the supplements in the Observer and Guardian about how to save money.  They read a bit like the Viz ‘Top Tips’ section in places, with tips on smuggling in your own sweets to the cinema and so on.  I’m still waiting for the tip on how to save nearly £350 […]

Nothing wrong with predictable

June 17th, 2008 · Comments Off on Nothing wrong with predictable · Life

I was quite happy to get some predictable gifts on Father’s Day.   A book about football, some stealth slippers and Paul Weller’s new CD.    I was dropping hints about the slippers before Christmas!  The old ones had harder soles and were louder than any outdoor footwear I have ever had – including football boots.

Fame at last

June 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Jane

I was quite chuffed to be asked if one of my photos could be used on a website (hey, it may have happened to some of you lots of times but I’m sure you felt the first time was quite special…) and have just had confirmation that the picture is now on there. LINK It […]
