Unsolicited testimonial

June 7th, 2010 · Comments Off on Unsolicited testimonial · Life

Jayne and I enjoyed a short break in Bristol.  More of that later, but for now I want to praise the hotel we stayed in – The Bristol Hotel. It is not cheap, in absolute terms, but for a two-night stay we were happy to fork out for a bit of comfort.   Having said that, […]

Novelty worn off

June 3rd, 2010 · Comments Off on Novelty worn off · Life, Technology

I think I have lost my geek mojo. Today I decided to skip lunch at work, in protest at the canteen having bloody courgettes and cauliflower on the menu together yet again, and went over the road to look in the shops instead.  Where I work the local shops are Comet, Currys and PC World.  […]

Watching telly

June 1st, 2010 · Comments Off on Watching telly · Technology

I had a bit of a surprise yesterday.  Jayne came home with a new TV. Only the other day I realised that I was possibly the only person I knew who was persisting with a CRT television, and now I don’t have that distinction as we have one of those plasma jobbies.

Tell me something I don’t know

May 21st, 2010 · Comments Off on Tell me something I don’t know · Life

Yesterday was Vine day.  I like Vine days. For the benefit of anybody who has not been paying attention, Vine is a scheme that Amazon run whereby they send free stuff to people and those people then write reviews of the products they receive.  If you don’t write reviews you stop getting the chance to […]

Vince Clarke and the temple of Synth

March 21st, 2010 · Comments Off on Vince Clarke and the temple of Synth · Music, Technology

Vince Clarke is one of Basildon’s best exports, having been behind Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure.  Obviously he knows a thing or two about synthesizers, but I didn’t know he was such a collector.  This story/video shows his remarkable collection of analogue synths.  Fantastic stuff.

iPhone alternative

November 30th, 2009 · Comments Off on iPhone alternative · Life

Want an iPhone for Christmas but can’t really afford the huge monthly charges? Well here is something that is a lot cheaper and yet still reassuringly overpriced for what it actually is while being strangely desirable despite everything.  Easier to use than a real iPhone as well!

More ISO than you can shake a stick at

October 15th, 2009 · Comments Off on More ISO than you can shake a stick at · Technology

Nikon’s new camera, the D3S (to come out next month) is reported to be capable of an ISO of 102,400. I don’t know a lot about the technicalities of cameras, but that sounds a little excessive to me. My camera does about 1600 ISO. Not sure what you would do with that, and at $5200 […]

Any colour you like

September 9th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life

About five or six years ago televisions were all silver – or at least silver coloured. Likewise all the peripherals were nearly all silver-coloured – the DVD players, video recorders (they were still on sale then), surround amplifiers and so on.  (By the way, in case nobody noticed, this is one of those boring idle […]

Wow. Just like Torchwood

September 1st, 2009 · Comments Off on Wow. Just like Torchwood · Technology

One of the bits of Torchwood that I found less credible (and there was a lot to choose from) was those contact lenses – the ones that work as a camera, transmitting pictures back to base and letting base send text messages back to the wearer.   No part of it seemed feasible, but now it […]

Spotify stuff

August 27th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life, Technology

I see that the Spotify app for the iPhone has been approved by Apple’s App Store.  Less than a month after I decided, when getting a new phone, that there was nothing about the iPhone to make me want it.  Never mind. This evening I have been listening to some stuff from the recent enormous […]
